Self Defense For Girls

Teaching self defense is another one of my passions. I have an amazing website www.selfdefenseforgirls.com   That has tons of great information. Here's a clip from it.

I hope you'll pass it on. All women as susceptible to being attack but young girls between the age of 17 to 24 are the most at risk. Share this with your daughters...

You Are Beautiful

Women are so great! We come in many sizes and colors. I struggle with the pressure that's put on us to have ripped abs and perfect hips.

I see a lot of my fellow fitness folk pushing the six pack abs and the "be skinny in 10 days" promise and it saddens me...well it actually makes me mad!

Women don't have to have perfect hips and ripped abs to be beautiful, valuable or even healthy. If you're born with the type of body that easily acquires ripped abs and you have small hips great. If not, so what!

I believe in becoming the best you can be. That's why I called my company "Get Real Fit". I wanted to support women in being who they are and becoming the best that they can.

I'm not fancy or flashy. I'm a small town gal but I sure know how to put together a good workout and I've done my homework so I have lots of great information to share. The information is grounded.

I love the Ivory Soap commercials that show "real women" promoting their products. Those women are gorgeous! The are full figured and proud of it.

There are lots of girls that are developing eating disorders and low self esteem because they want to be what is being pushed off as beautiful. Being healthy is beautiful no matter what size or shape.

I had an eating disorder for many years because I felt I wasn't thin enough. It took a lot of hard work to overcome that problem and I still struggle a bit with it. I have not gone back to the behavior but only because I work hard every day not to.

My rule is to eat as healthy as possible and get your exercise. Embrace your own beauty. I get pretty passionate about that. I can't help it. I've seen so many women unhappy with their bodies it truly makes me cry. I allowed myself to fall prey to that kind of thinking at one time and it's "stinking thinking".

Wanting to be healthy so you can enjoy your life and give to those around you makes sense that's where I try to get my thoughts focussed.

This is a subject that I could go on and on about. It's why I do what I do.

Are You Afraid Of Getting Bulky By Weight Lifting?

Does weight lifting scare you?

A lot of women are worried they'll get big and bulky if they weight train.

Some women will get more defined muscles but to bulk up requires a certain body type and a lot of heavy lifting plus a special high protein diet. The women you see in the "body building" contests work very hard for those results.

Most women get stronger but not bulky. Weight training helps you control your weight. The more muscle mass you have the more calories you burn just sitting around. Fat goes for a free ride and burns zero calories!

Weight lifting doesn't need to be done every day. In fact it's best not to train every day. Your body builds muscle on the rest days not while you're actually lifting. Two to three non consecutive days per week is all you need.

Weight training shouldn't take a lot of time. Half an hour is great! No more than an hour is advised. You burn a fuel called glycogen when you do weight training. Your body has a limited supply so keeping your weight training session short is important.

Weight training not only helps you control your weight it makes you strong!  Being strong allows you to be more independent. You can go to the grocery store and get your own big bag of dog food.

I've been weight training for years and I am surely not bulky. I'm lean and toned but not muscular. I have no desire to bulk up and I don't think my long lean body would behave if I ate the protein diets and lifted the really heavy weights required to be a "body builder".

I specialize in strength training for women. If you're looking for some good routines visit my website www.getrealfit.org and go to the "products" page. You'll see the workouts available to you.

The fear of getting weak and overweight should out weigh the fear of getting bulky.

The Pressure To Be Beautiful

There is so much pressure on the young girls of today to be perfect and beautiful. With all the false representation the media presents it's harder than ever to actually be as beautiful as what is presented to the public.

Here's a video that helps to make that truth clear. This is a good video to share with your daughters and to be aware of yourself.

Self Defense For Women And Girls

Women and girls have to defend themselves differently than men. We aren't as strong so we have to be smarter.

The element of surprise is our strong point if we have to fight. Staying out of bad situations is key. Staying alert and aware of your environment is vital.

Being fit is necessary if you do find yourself in a situation where you have to fight and fight hard.

www.selfdefenseforgirls.com  is a new website I just launched to help women and girls have the information you need to defend yourselves.

I've been teaching self defense for over a decade. Since my surgery I've not been able to teach so I got stir crazy and developed this website. I just filmed the youtube videos and had to be very careful of my neck. I'm still healing from my spine surgery.

I'm almost a year into recovery but have another year before I'll be able to teach and then I'll need an assistant. Self defense classes do and should get very physical.

Hope you enjoy the website. Let me know what you think!

Womens' Weight Studies

I just got my American Council on Exercise magazine and saw a new study on middle aged women and weight control.

The journal of the American Medical Association found that middle aged women require an hour of daily moderate-intensity exercise to maintain their weight. That doesn't include cleaning house and such, they state that means activities like walking, swimming and yoga.

They go on to say that is over what is recommended for health benefits. They are focusing on weight control for middle aged women. Younger women were not included in the studies.

They also say that's not possible for many women so a combination of exercise and eating fewer calories may be more doable.

That makes sense to me. I gained a bit of weight after my spinal surgery. I use to exercise far more than an hour a day. I tried to do just the 30 minutes once I was able to and I kept gaining weight. I love to eat!  I had to cut way back on my intake to get a hold of things.

The good news is that you can split that time up if you want to be able to eat the same amount of food you did when you were younger.

As we age we lose muscle mass so gaining weight comes with that. Making adjustments is important if you want to maintain a healthy weight.

I wanted to pass that on to you. Exercise is so important. Got to keep your body moving!

Feel free to leave questions and comments. I'd love to hear from you!

Workouts Shouldn't Leave You Feeling Stupid

Do you ever feel like "why don't I look like that?" while you're doing the latest and greatest workout DVD. Often the girls on the DVD look like they live in the gym.

Do you ever feel like "why was I given two left feet?" and had to keep the remote next to you so you can stop and figure out what they just did over and over.

I know I've felt like that and I'm a fitness specialist. Some of the routines used currently are really tough to learn.

Few of them have an instructional section for you to learn the more difficult moves. That can discourage anyone from working out. I really try to make our workouts doable. I always have a moderator doing low impact so those who can't do high impact moves can follow the moderator. I have an instructional section in each of my workouts so you can learn the more challenging moves before you begin.

I also use girls that are in great shape but don't have ripped abs and skinny butts. They don't live at the gym but are very healthy.

We aren't fancy but we are good.

I do use martial art moves in my aerobic DVDs but they are doable moves. Don't let that scare you.

The martial arts have been used for 1000's of years for fitness purposes. The moves simply work. They challenge your body in ways standard exercise can't.

If you want to get in great shape, feel good about yourself and have fun. Check out my workouts at  http://www.getrealfit.org/products.html

You'll walk away feeling challenged but good about yourself and your choice to take care of yourself!

Our workouts aren't fancy but they are great!

Finding The Right Fitness Equipment?

All fitness equipment is not equal!

Strength training is one of my specialties. I have a lot of different certifications from courses I've taken to maintain my certification with the American Council on Exercise.

I think strength training is crucial for your health.

I'm not a big believer in machines for weight training. If you have an injury they're helpful because the machines help your body stabilize.

Now that may sound good but if you have no injuries it's not the ideal.

Muscles lift, lower and stabilize. Working all those functions is the best way to strength train.

I love free weights as well as elastic bands and rings for equipment. They do the job and are less expensive than machines. Elastic bands and rings are highly affordable, travel with you to work or where ever you go.

I've checked out the companies that supply the best equipment and created the Equipment page on my website take you to those manufactures. I picked a variety of online stores so you'll be able to get all that you need on our site.

Give the site a visit and check out the http://www.getrealfit.org/equipment.html page to purchase great equipment.
