Getting Older Does Not Mean You Have To Be Weaker

I am going thru such a change in my life. I hit my 60th birthday still looking good naked. Did I say that out loud? lol. The thing that amazes me is I don't have to exercise as hard as I use to to still have a healthy life and to look good in jeans.

I'm not the pure hard body I was before but I'm not hiding from the mirror when I take a shower either. In fact I smile and say, " not bad for an old lady!" I'm down to strength training for under 30 minutes with weights twice a week and doing body weight strength training twice a week for under 30 minutes. I walk every day with my very high need puppy. I play with her a lot too which burns up the calories.

It's tempting to just stop exercising but then the memory of having no muscles after my cervical surgery comes to remind me that it's a privilege to be able to exercise. I wasn't allowed to lift a shoe for months and still have limits after almost two years.

So getting older does not mean you have to get weak. Just a limited amount of time spent on exercise reaps a huge amount of rewards!

You're As Young As You Are Limber!

You're as young as you are limber. That's a saying women who are deeply into yoga chant. There's truth to those words. Flexibility allows freedoms. You can tie your own shoelaces when you're limber. You can bend down to pick up your dog or cat. Your joints and tendons need to stay long and healthy.

Everyone can stretch. If you look at animals when they get up after sleeping you'll see them stretch. Stress in your body is alleviated when you stretch. Have you noticed how tense you become when you're under stress? Taking a big breath and stretching can help the tension go away. Headaches and back aches can be prevented if you spend a few minutes breathing and stretching.

Your relationship with your body improves when you stretch. Often we forget about our bodies. Sometimes it seems our bodies just get in the way. It's important to take the time to relax, breath, stretch and become aware of your body. Your body tells you when things are amiss. Investing time in your body by keeping it limber is time well spent.

When should you stretch? You can stretch anytime; when you first get up in the morning, in the evening before you go to bed, at the office after working on the computer is a great time. It's important to do a few arm circles and walk around for a few minutes or march in place to warm up your muscles.

Getting your muscles warm and supple is important. You'll get better results and lessen your chance of tearing a muscle. The goal is to lengthen your muscles not tear them. If you stretch on a cold muscle it can tear.

In the old days we'd stretch before we ran. Now most trainers either lightly stretch before a workout or wait until after the workout to stretch.

How long should you hold the stretch? That's debatable. Most physical therapists say thirty seconds. My favorite book, "Stretching" says ten seconds. The American Council On Exercise taught me fifteen seconds. Trying them all and finding what works for you is the best advise I can give you.

Breathing while stretching is crucial. That relaxes your muscles and allows them to lengthen.

In the old days we'd bounce when we stretched. No more! There are two tendons that respond when you stretch. One tendon's job is to prevent tears so it will tighten to prevent tearing. The other tendon's job is to let the muscle lengthen. Holding a stretch activates the lengthening tendon while bouncing activates the shortening tendon. Holding a stretch without bouncing will produce better results.

Stretching is a natural thing that you want to do often. These few tips should help you get the most out of it.

Aerobic Classes Offer More

Aerobic classes have so much to offer you! You work your body in more ways than if you walk, run, or bike. You build coordination, work various muscle groups, improve fast twitch muscle development and improve your balance if you have a well-designed routine.

Finding a good instructor is key. You want to make sure they are certified or have a college degree in exercise physiology. Knowing how the human body works is key to creating a good aerobic routine.

Having fun during your classes is important. Being the best in the crowd is not necessary. Having good form and listening to your own body is where your focus should be. It is difficult to have fun in a class if you believe that you have to compete with the other participants. We all have our gifts. Some people are naturally coordinated while others have to work at it. I am not a natural. I have to work hard at learning new routines.

If the class uses a lot of jumping and leaping moves, known as high impact; a good instructor will demonstrate low impact examples for those who are not able to do the high impact moves. Older people and those with injuries should limit the amount of high impact they do.

Many gyms and studios label their classes as to the difficulty so you will know if the class is your level. That is extremely helpful. If they do not label the difficulty of their classes be sure to ask what type of classes the facility has so you will be able to take the appropriate level of class. You do not want to find yourself in a class that is meant only for the "super fit" unless you are highly fit. In the advanced classes no examples of low impact are generally shown and the instructor usually really pushes her students.

There are lots of different types of aerobic classes here are a few:

Step classes are very popular. If you are coordinated and have healthy knees step classes are great. Step classes can be tough on your knees and if you are not coordinated you can get hurt falling off the step.

Dance classes like "Zumba" and "Hip Hop" are packing women in! They are fun and get your heart pumping while you wiggle your hips which gives you great abs. They are generally low impact as well which makes them doable by most people.

Boot Camp classes are very effective. Know that when you enter a boot camp class you will not be babied. They are no-nonsense get the job done classes. You will be doing a lot of basic moves like push ups and jumping rope. The instructor may play the "tough guy" role for effect. Take that with a grain of salt and go at your own pace.

Spin classes generally require a pre sign up do to limited equipment. You may need special shoes. Some facilities provide them other require you to bring your own. A good instructor will have you huffing and puffing in no time. She will work your coordination by having you up and down in your seat, swinging your arms and lots of other fun moves.

Water aerobic classes are great for those who are not able to do regular "land aerobics" as well as those who just love to be in the water. The instructor will have you using the water's resistance to challenge your muscles and lungs. All you need is your bathing suit, a towel, the willingness to work and you are ready!

Kickboxing is my favorite type of aerobic class. The moves utilize your upper and lower body very effectively. You will have lots of oxygen in your body which allows you to burn lots of fat and to keep going longer due to having so much oxygen in your system. Fat requires oxygen to become used as a fuel source. The more oxygen you have in your system the more fat you can burn. It is a large fuel source so you can keep working out for a long time and it's by-product is water so you will be more comfortable throughout your workout session.

Most gyms and community centers offer aerobic classes. You also have the option of using workout DVDs at home or doing the DVDS with a group of people at a common location. Workout DVDS are wonderful for those days you are not able to get to the gym as well.

If you have not tried aerobic classes I highly suggest that you do. They challenge your muscles, coordination, balance and are really fun to do! They offer more than most other forms of aerobic activities.

Great Information About Exercise Shoes

I did a podcast recently with this information as well as an Enzine Article so there are few places you can get this information from me. I wanted to make it easy for you to get this information. It's good stuff! So if you prefer to read it from
my blog here's the info...

Shoes are a topic near and dear to most women. Some have closets just to house their passion. Depressed? Go buy shoes is the mantra for many.

Unlike dress and casual shoes, buying exercise shoes is something most people do too seldom. I always tell my clients their shoes looks will far out live their effectiveness. The support aspect of exercise shoes breaks down at a much faster rate than the outside appearance of exercise shoes.
Worn out exercise shoes is one of the main causes of exercise injuries.

If you have a few pairs of exercise shoes that you trade-off wearing than your shoes will last longer. The average time is 7 months if you exercise 5 to 6 days per week. If you wear one pair of shoes, they generally lose their effectiveness after about 3 to 4 months if you exercise 5 to 6 days a week. If you only exercise 3 days per week your shoes may last a bit longer.

There are suggestions as to how many hours you should wear a pair of shoes but that can get pretty taxing trying to figure out how many hours you have worn your shoes.

Keeping the receipt for your exercise shoes helps two-fold. If you need to return them you have your receipt and you also have the date to refer to for the age of your shoes. You can write the day on your calendar as well. Find a way to post the date you started wearing your shoes so you will have something to refer to when it is time to get new exercise shoes.

The time of day you shop for shoes is important. If you shop for shoes in the morning your feet are smaller so your shoes may be too tight. Afternoons are a better time to go shopping for shoes. Be sure to bring along the socks you will be wearing too so you get the best fit possible.

Finding out if your feet pronate or supinate is very important. Some people pronate or roll their feet in favoring the inside of the foot when they walk while others roll their feet out, supinate, favoring the outside of the foot while walking. There are shoes that address both issues.

It is very important to know if your feet have either of these conditions. There are shoes designed to help with both conditions. If you pronate and you buy a shoe for those who supinate the shoe will make your pronation worse!

Each sport or exercise form has a different requirement for shoes. Running and walking shoes support front to back motion. Aerobic shoes support side-to-side motion while basketball shoes support a multitude of motions.

It is very important not to wear a running, walking or basketball shoe for aerobic classes. Kickboxing, step, low or high impact aerobic classes all travel side-to-side as well as front to back. The support running and walking shoes give is for front to back motion. You could easily sprain your ankle wearing running or walking shoes while doing aerobic classes.

You might think that a basketball shoe would work well for aerobic classes because they support all angles of motion but not really. They tend to be very stiff and heavy so the moves done in aerobic classes do not do well with basketball shoes either. Aerobic classes require either aerobic shoes or cross trainers. They support the moves you will be doing and are the best weight and flexibility for aerobic classes.

If you are a walker getting a good walking shoe is important. Walking is a different motion than running so the weight, flexibility and cushioning of the walking shoe is different. If you are a serious runner you also want to invest in a good running shoe because their construction supports your movement better. If you want an all around shoe the cross trainer may do the job for you. They support from varies angles and are generally lighter than a basketball shoe.

As confusing as it may seem it is a blessing that so many shoes are available. They help to prevent sport injuries so the time spent finding your "perfect" shoe is time well spent. You will have a much better chance of being injury free.

Let's recap the above information, it is best to:

Buy exercise shoes often

Shop for shoes in the late day with the socks you will be wearing

Find out if your feet pronate or supinate

Buy the shoe that is designed for the type of exercise you will be doing

Armed with this information you should be able to make wise shoe choices and enjoy the exercise or sport you will be doing with them.

Dance Your Way to a Healthy Body

Do you love to dance? Good news! You can dance your way to health. Dancing will:

Lower your risk of coronary heart disease

Help keep your heart in good shape and can lead to a reduced heart rate over time

Help you manage or lose weight

Strengthen the bones of your legs or hips

Condition your body

Build and increase stamina

Develop your circulatory system

Strengthen and tone your muscles

Increase your flexibility and balance

Relieve stress and improve your mood

Lower your blood pressure and improve your cholesterol levels

Allows you to have fun while getting fit...

That's a dozen good things dancing does for you and your body!

Different types of dancing burn more calories. Aerobic dancing burns the highest amount of calories. It can burn up to 540 calories in an hour.

Ball room dancing burns around 250 to 400 calories, square dancing about 280 calories, ballet about 300 calories, salsa dancing burns around 400 calories in an hour.

Even if you don't dance for a full hour you still get great benefits. Dancing for 10 to 20 minutes 3 times a day is a good way to get extra exercise in. Put on some music that makes you want to shake your boodie and make up your own dances. The point is to keep moving and dancing is a fun way to do that.

If you check out your local community centers or collages you can generally find dance classes at a reasonable rate. It's a wonderful way to meet new friends too.

Are You Becoming A Couch Potato Fitness Person?

I just read an article the American Council On Exercise sent to my e mail. I love getting updates on all that's going on in the fitness industry. I had to laugh at this one though...

Research is suggesting that "couch potatoes" will not get fit on the weekly suggested 150 minutes of aerobics and the 2 hours of strength training the Center for Disease Control and Prevention sets for adults.

Hmmmm really! Let's look at that. 150 minutes of aerobics per week adds up to 22 minutes a day of aerobics or 50 minutes 3 days per week of aerobics. That doesn't sound like too little exercise for the average person. But if that's all the activity obtained during the day getting fit would be tough.

The article goes on to say that the average person sits for 9.3 hours a day, watches 5 hours of television, and spends about an hour internet surfing plus spends extra time emailing, Tweeting, texting and visiting their Facebook friends. That adds up to about 15 hours of being inactive! Add to that 8 hours of sleep and that leaves one hour of moving.

I hope the numbers suggested are wrong. No laundry would ever be done and what about eating? Of course you could do that while watching tv but you have to cook, unless you send out for food or bring home fast food. Not a pretty picture.

They actually have a term for doing daily exercise but then sitting for the remaining time, "couch potato fitness". Sitting for long periods of time is hard on your body!

Common sense seems to escape some people. Adding exercise to an active life improves health but it won't make up for being lazy.

I must confess that I spend way too much time on the computer but I do get up stretch, clean my house, play with my doggies and include exercise daily. I have to push myself away from the computer at times. I really love it but I like being healthy more.

It's so important to stay active. The article stated that your activity level through out the day is just as important if not more important than getting your 150 hours of weekly aerobics and your 2 hours of strength training.

Makes sense to me. Hope it does to you too:)

More About Milk And How It Benefits You After Exercise

There was so much interest in the post about milk and exercise recovery that I decided to share more information.

The studies are still in process but here are some findings:

Low fat or fat free milk are absorbed more slowly into the system than current sport drinks so the rehydration abilities appear to be greater with milk. The tests showed less urination post exercise than with the other drinks thus suggesting better hydration occurs with milk than with other sport drinks.

Milk has shown to aid in the way your body uses protein after exercise so drinking low fat milk after strength training particularly may help you build muscle better.

Milk is naturally high in the electrolytes lost during exercise. Low fat milk can replace those electrolytes. It also has the carbohydrates your body needs to restore its glycogen storages after exercise.

Glycogen is an energy source your body uses during exercise along with fat. Your body has a much smaller supply of glycogen than fat so replacing your glycogen storage is very important after exercise.

Here's a link to one source to learn more about milk and exercise   http://www.jissn.com/content/5/1/15

The studies about milk and exercise are on going. I personally find that it benefits my recovery from exercise. If you're lactose intolerant it's not wise to use milk but if you have the enzymes needed to digest dairy you might want to give it a try!

Keep your questions and comments coming. I love them. It encourages me to share more helpful information.

Okay I'm Going To Start Exercising But Which Type Is Best?

Are you confused about which type of exercise is BEST?

The verdict keeps changing on which exercise is best and which exercises are bad. They use to think running hurt your knees now they are considering that it saves your knees!

It can get overwhelming if you just want to get in good shape. How do you know which type of exercise to choose?

Each person is different and each body responds differently to different exercises. It's good to vary types of exercise but if you're the, " I just want a routine I can do and get on with my life!" type of a person simple is best. It's okay to stick with one routine.

Try out the different types of exercise until you find which ones work for you. If you get bored easily continue to experiment.

Getting aerobics and strength training into your weekly routine is what you need to do. Which type is best can be argued so picking the type that makes you willing to exercise is the best type for you.

Don't take all the "new findings" too seriously. They change almost as much as the weather. The important thing is to MOVE. Whatever works for you is great!

Can Exercise Help Flatten Your Abs?

Just over a year ago I had major surgery. I had 3 levels fused in my neck. It was due to a sport injury. It was a tough recovery. I have a really long neck so it was a bit more of a struggle for me to recovery than those who have short necks.

Slow walking was all I could do...very slow. It wasn't until I was nine months along that I was able to pick up the pace and to include strength training.

I have the straight up and down body type that adds weight in my middle (the worst place to gain). I lost my muscle mass so my legs got skinny and my belly got a roll. I was still thin just became what I call a skinny fat person. I was more fat than muscle.

I've been doing my workouts for just over three months and am thrilled to report my muscle to fat ratio is really good again. My belly roll is gone! Ya Ho.

I had to share this little clip with you. Spot reduction does not work but spot firming does. It toned my abs back up and I'm back to me again

It does take consistency but age is not a factor. I'm almost sixty years old. I was able to do a do over and it worked.

I hope this encourages you to hang in there, keep trying.

Here's A Great Way To Strength Train

I love to lift weights! I do that once a week. The other days I use bands and rings (or some call them loops).

Bands and rings give you a different feel. I get a deeper burn. I was amazed when I started to use them. They're easier on your joints than weights too.

Bands and rings also take a lot less hassle to use. They don't take up space for storage. They can't fall on the floor and injure the cat or your kids lol. They're inexpensive and easy to take from room to room, to work or to a hotel.

Variety is key with exercise. It's good to use different methods to strength train just like using different methods to get your aerobics.

Anything that overloads the muscles will cause the muscle to strengthen. Using your body weight to challenge your muscles works too.

As we age we lose muscle mass which leads to a slower metabolism which leads to weight gain. It is so important to take the time to strength train.

I share my personal band workout out on my DVD "Body Bands and Rings"

I've done this workout all over the world. I travel with a bag of bands and rings in my luggage and I'm good to go. I can strength train where ever I am. No need to skip my workout.

You can buy the bands on my website on the "equipment" page http://www.getrealfit.org/products.html you don't have bands or rings. They sell them at most sporting good stores.

Give bands and rings a try and let me know what you think.

Becoming The Most Beautiful You!

become the best you can be!
Exercise does so much for you! It burns fat, strengthens your muscles and your bones as well as so many other health improvements...the list is long.

One thing it can't do is decide where your fat will be reduced from or give you a different body type.

Yes, you can get stronger abs and a firmer body by exercising but the fat on top of the muscle can't be lessened by spot reducing exercises.

Losing weight and doing aerobics will lessen your fat but your body is predetermined as to where that fat loss will come from.

Generally your body has a favorite place to gain and lose fat from. Some women tend to store fat in their middle section and some women tend to store fat in their bottoms and thighs.

If you are a pear type body shape (small upper body and large in the hips and thighs) you won't become an hour glass shape when you exercise and lose weight, just a smaller pear shape.

Learning to accept your body type is important. Then you can work at making it the best looking body within that shape.

I would highly suggest focusing on your best body and letting go of the false claims made by some workouts to give you six pack abs and skinny thighs.

If you're born with the tendency for a six pack and skinny thighs great! If not you're heading for some disappointment.

All women are beautiful! Becoming your best is the best goal!

Uncle Sam Wants You To Get Healthy

The Government is really trying to get people moving!

Health care is an issue right now. Insurance rates are rising. One way of improving the situation is to improve the publics' health.

Exercise is one of the primary ways to improve health! The government is completely aware of this fact.

Their website explains the new requirements for weekly exercise www.health.gov/paguidelines

The old 30 minute daily rule is now being replace by a weekly amount of exercise. 150 minutes of weekly exercise is the minimum.

It can be split up into 10 minute sessions twice everyday, three 50 minute sessions per week...they give a variety of ways to divide the time.

Having the time spread out is the best way. Doing it all in one or two days is not wise! They do not recommend that.

The goal is to make it easy for people to get their aerobic exercise in. They also recommend two to three strength training days per week. Those must be done on non consecutive days! You need 48 hours of rest between sessions. Your muscle build on your rest day!

They don't give a time allotment for the strength training. It needs to be under an hour. It should be at least 15 minutes.

The government site goes on to say that for the best health improvements, 300 hours per week is needed. I would totally agree!

They state that some of the exercise needs to be vigorous. They say that one minute of vigorous activity equals 2 minutes of moderate activity.

That's a bit confusing. How much of the time needs to be vigorous and how much moderate? Does that mean I can do less time if it's all vigorous?

I suggest two to three non consecutive days of at least 20 minutes of vigorous exercise which could be jogging, aerobic workouts (examples:kick boxing, dancing, step workouts ) or playing active sports. That can be split in two 10 minute sessions.

The rest of the minutes can be used walking, doing tai chi, ballroom dancing, riding an exercise bike at a slower pace, anything that gets you moving but doesn't get you extremely winded.

If vigorous exercise is not possible for you just doing the moderate exercise will be helpful!

Children and adolescents need one hour per day of aerobic activity. That's 420 minutes of weekly aerobic activity. Three hours of that needs to be vigorous.

It's a great website to stroll through.

It's helpful to keep learning about exercise so you're inspired to do it. Out of sight out of mind! It's easy to think "I'll get to that tomorrow".

Keep visiting my blog because I'll keep you posted on all the new stuff and the old stuff that works. I'm here for you!

Tips For Staying Fit Through Out Your Life!

Getting great tips for staying fit through out your life is like being given the Hope Diamond...they're extremely valuable.

I was reading "More" magazine and came across some fantastic tips for staying young after 40. The good news is...they're the tips I've been giving for years.

Having your information confirmed by doctors is always comforting.

Here are the tips:

After the age of 30 your body changes due to hormonal levels changing. Most women start to store more fat in their stomaches and their once firm muscles start to loosen.

The answer to real change is...EXERCISE!

Exercise retards aging on a cellular level...it truly works!

One great suggestion was that if finding time to exercise is a problem, instead of exercising 3 to 4 times a week for 20 to 40 minute blocks...exercise for at least 10 minutes 2 to 4 times a day and do it everyday!

Turning on the timer and cleaning the house vigorously counts. At work, looking at your watch and going up and down the stairs or walking vigorously around the parking lot counts. Going to the mall for lunch and walking around the mall at a fast pace counts.

Studies show that most women who are instructed to exercise in that manner do more exercise than those who are told to do "block" timed exercise and because of the increased exercise tend to lose up to 5 lbs more than the "block" timed exercisers.

If you are already walking, jogging, or riding a bike...include intervals 2 to 3 days per week! Spend 20 seconds to 2 minutes at full speed then at least the equal time recovering through out your 30 to 40 minute aerobic workout. The results are amazing!

Do weight training with free weights 2 to 3 non consecutive days per week.

Weight training increases your muscle mass which increases the number of calories your body burns and improves your body's appearance.

Free weights are more effective than the machines because your muscles are challenged in more functions than with the machines. Your body has to stabilize it's self instead of the machines doing the work so the results are better.

Instead of taking a day off from exercise when you're sore...do an active rest day. Take an easy walk, stretch several times a day. Use a foam roller to help massage your sore muscles. You can find the foam rollers at sporting good stores and on line.

Eat 5 to 6 small meals per day instead of 3 square meals! That slows down the release of insulin in your body, a hormone that causes your body to store more fat. Each meal should be about 300 calories and include protein and carbs.

Pump up your protein intake. As you age it's harder for your body to recover from exercise so you need more protein.

Eating half your weight in protein grams everyday is what is recommended. If your 120 lbs that's 60 grams of protein. If you're eating protein with all your 5 to 6 meals you'll achieve that!

Those are great tips. I've been using them for years!

Laughing Your Way To Health

Laugh your way to health!

The American Council on Exercise sends it's members a wonderful publication called "fitness matters". It's a great magazine.

One of the articles this month shares the impact laughter has on our health. It's huge!

Laughter diminishes the secretion of cortisol and epinephrine (the stress hormones),while enhancing immune reactivity.

It helps your heart by reducing stress on your arteries and increasing your blood flow which lowers blood pressure and cholesterol build-up and reduces your heart rate so it lessens the chance of having a heart attack.

When you laugh, your diaphragm moves up and down and it directly massages your internal organs, such as your lungs and stomach, and helps with digestion and constipation.

A deep laugh tones your abdominals, your facial muscles, lifts depression and helps you sleep better.

20 seconds of a good belly laugh does amazing things for your health.

That's good news!

We all need to laugh more especially with all of the stress we're feeling due to the economy.

So watch a funny movie or go out to lunch with friends that easily tickle your funny bone!

Workout That Gets It All!

Life gets so busy for all of us. That's why I created this workout. It gets it all! Both aerobics and strength training.

I did it this morning and loved it. I do the low impact now due to my new neck. I kept in motion during the short water breaks and stored my weights up high so I didn't have to bend down to get them. I was able to keep moving through out the whole workout. I needed the break when I did the high impact LOL

What Is A Fitness Stick?

I'm recovering from spine surgery. My physical therapist is a firm believer in fitness sticks. I purchased one per her request and love it!

I think the best exercise for the stick is working your rotator cuff muscles which are the tiny muscles in your shoulders that make them move. God gave you tiny muscles to do a very big job!

She has me hold it by my side with my arm straight, palm facing me. She then has me do very small shakes in and out from my side with my arm locked straight. Man does it burn!

She puts a timer on and has me go for 2 minutes. I can switch sides (she forgot to tell me that the first time I did it and that was crazy hard).

I went to the Brooks store to buy mine but I found it on Amazon and wanted to pass the info on to you.  I am an Amazon affiliate. I wish I would have checked there first ugggg

If you get a fitness stick let me know how you do with it. There are other exercises that are great. I'm just not able to do them yet.

Feel free to leave comments and questions. I love hearing from you.
